13th of Spetember, 11 AM in Frankfurt: My airplane takes off. You can tell, how excited I was. I bet my sitting neighbour thought something wasn't right with me, because I couldn't stop smiling. As soon as the airplane took off, all my worries about homesickness and failing disappeared, I just wanted my adventure in Down Under to start. The first stop was in Dubai, the second in Sydney. One more flight to Gold Coast left - and I almost missed it! But somehow I managed it and after another hour in a plane I finally (14th of September, 8.30PM - that makes 25 hours) got to meet my host-family!
The first day in Australia was already really busy: We started the day at 7.30AM with shopping at the markets, went on with a 5km park run (right next to the beach, how awesome is this??) and then drove to Moreton Island with the whole family including three Au Pairs!! (photos/videos of Moreton coming soon) I can't tell you how amazing my first weekend was. A stunning first sunset at the beach, swimming in aqua-coloured water aka THE OCEAN and sleeping in tents while hearing animals right next to you. Driving at the beach with a 4WD, going to the desert of Moreton for sand boarding and seeing whales for the first time. What a great way to start this adventure!
When we came back on monday, the "everyday life" started. Bathing the children, tidy up, cooking meals in the kitchen (instead of making dinner over the campfire). I was lucky, that the old Au Pair stayed a week and showed me everything: The routines, the fridge, the closet of the kids - it was a lot to remember at the beginning!!! But even though it seemed impossible at first to manage this and to follow in the old Au Pairs footsteps - just keep on trying and do the best you can. The other Au Pairs before me may had diffrent strength, but that doesn't mean that I am not as good as they are. Always do the best you can and put effort in everything - other people will appreciate what you're doing and how you're doing it.
During my first week I already saw a lot of the surrounding area: Byron Bay (love it!!!), Cabarita (prettiest sunset spot), Kingscliff (have you ever heard of The Creek?), Coolangatta (windy, a good surfing spot and also nice food - try the gelato of Gelatissimo!) and Currumbin at night (art at the beach, how nice is this?)
And what I was probably most excited about when I came to Australia was surfing - and it still is! On sunday morning (it started 7.30AM!!) I had my first lesson at the Salty Girls Surf School. The coaches are really nice and positive and keep on pushing you (literally). And believe it or not: I catched the first wave and already stand up!! What a great morning with really nice waves, awesome people and the best weather you could wish for!
Alright, enough for today, I have to cook dinner now.
See you soon, mates!!!
xo, Greaty
